April Fool’s Dinner

Every year, my children wait in anticipation for what they will have for their April Fool’s dinner.  From past years, they know that they are not allowed to step into the kitchen until “dinner” is ready because I’m cooking up something “special”.  Although they know something is not going to be quite right, it doesn’t stop them from giggling and having a blast.

I have compiled a list of April Fool’s food I have prepared in the past. I prefer April Fool recipes that look almost exactly like the real thing, so the “recipes” below will resemble the real thing. Enjoy!

  1. Mock Meatloaf with mashed potatoes
  2. Mashed potato sundaes

3. Mashed potato cupcakes

4. Pre-sliced banana – I originally saw this on Family Fun, but I can’t seem to find it online.  But this site shows how to accomplish this neat trick!

5. Grilled cheese

6. Faux chicken nuggets

7. Mock Sushi – ok – these don’t really look like the real thing, but it’s so cute – I had to do them!

8. This year, I think that I will make Shepard’s pie, Jello Bananas, and “Devil” eggs! MWA-HAHA-HAHA!

Note: I saw another posting on these Devil eggs.  If you don’t want to go to all that trouble of making the “egg whites”, simply use real eggs, scoop out the yolk, and fill with yellow frosting!

Have Fun!

Update April 2, 2015:

The jello bananas were a complete failure :(. They looked so cool hat I had to try it, but I just could not figure out how to do it. So, after wasting 4 bananas, I quit .

The shepards pie came out just fine, however if I think that it would be better if marshmallow fluff was used as the topping, if not vanilla ice cream. Melting the marshmallows made it too flat and sticky. So scooping it out to serve it to my kids gave it away. Also, to make the Cocoa Rice Krispies less sticky and hard like the original Rice Krispies treats, I added a tiny bit of half-and-half to the butter marshmallow mixture.

The “devil” eggs was a complete success. Aside from the jello-like feel, it was identical to the real thing! In fact, my 16 year old saw me making the egg whites ( it was still in its mold) and he asked me if it was for them. When I said ” Yes it is!”, alongside my devilish grin, he was ecstatic! LOL! Then for dinner, he popped it into his mouth, chewed it, then spit it out! HAAHAAAHAA !  It was so funny, that we decided to save it for the next day for my daughter, who would be arriving home from college.  Right before she walked though the door we set the  eggs on the table. She’s walked right up to the table and popped it into her mouth! The look on her face was priceless! She said that it’s not fair that I tricked her because April Fool’s is over, to which I promptly replied that if she followed my blog, then she would’ve known!!! She is currently not speaking to me! LOL! Next time, I think I will add more unflavored gelatin to make the eggs less jelly-like.  MWAHAAHAAAA! Till next year….
