The Day the Crayons Quit

This year, for our annual Book club production, the teachers decided to do “The Day the Crayons Quit”.  So adult sized crayon costumes were in order! With the use of poster board, black spray paint,  craft foam, colored string, Velcro, and a hot glue gun, the box of crayons came into being!

The crayon ” wrapper” was made of posterboard. To make it easier to make multiple crayon wrappers, I made a template for the top and bottom squiggle line, and a template for the “Crayola” sign. I then spray-painted it black. It will work just as well if you decided to color it with crayons, marker, or if you choose to paint it black.  Next, I attached on Velcro for ease of putting on and removing the costume.  I chose posterboard because we were on a budget, and there was just one showing of this play, so it was not necessary to make it very durable. If we needed this costume for multiple shows, or to last ( i.e. Halloween) I would’ve used something like felt or flannel.

The crayon tops were hats made out of craft foam. I used 2 large sheets of foam. I rolled the first foam sheet, and then hot glued the seams. I took the second sheet and folded it lengthwise three times. I then glued it as the rim of the hat. It made a perfect sharp crayon tip!
